De NAL staat voor Novell Application Launcher en is een onderdeel van het product ZENworks Desktop Management. ZEN staat weer voor Zero Effort Networking. Het doel van dit product is dan ook met zo weinig mogelijk moeite alle desktops in je netwerk omgeving zo goed mogelijk te beheren. Dus de NAL kan worden gebruikt om iedereen op dezelfde manier van applicaties, updates en instellingen te voorzien.

Verdere functionaliteit van de NAL en ZENworks kan onder andere worden gevonden in:

1. Werkstation registratie
   1. Alle werkstations worden in eDirectory geregistreerd. Aan deze geregistreerde werkstations worden vervolgens de applicaties gekoppeld. Alleen geregistreerde werkstations krijgen dus applicaties aangeboden. Deze registratie houdt bij wie erop het werkstation inlogt en welk ip adres het werkstation heeft.
2. Remote control
   1. Indien een werkstation netjes is geregistreerd en de gebruikmakende gebruiker geeft hiervoor toestemming (dit moet voor elke sessie opnieuw) kan een beheerder meekijken met een gebruiker om een probleem op te lossen. Dit kan ons veel tijd schelen bij het oplossen van kleine problemen.

Als alles goed is geïnstalleerd start de NAL automatisch op na het inloggen. Binnen de NAL zijn er folders waarmee applicaties logisch gegroepeerd worden. Indien dit vervelend is kan er ook gekozen worden voor de ALL view:

Binnen de NAL kunnen op een aantal verschillende manieren packages aangeboden worden. Dit zullen voornamelijk installaties en snelkoppelingen naar applicaties zijn. Installaties staan altijd onder aparte mappen en de naam van de applicatie zal het je ook vertellen. Snelkoppelingen vertellen simpelweg naar welke applicatie ze verwijzen. Indien de applicatie niet geïnstalleerd is zal de snelkoppeling in zwart/wit zijn:
Ook kunnen bepaalde instellingen in de NAL aangeboden worden. Hierbij kun je bijvoorbeeld denken aan de proxy instellingen en de Windows Update instellingen.

Je kan de nal opstarten door naar Start → Uitvoeren te gaan en het volgende commando te geven:

nalwin

Indien de NAL niet opstart, of wel opstart maar er verschijnen geen applicaties kun je het volgende commando geven in een DOS-Box:

zwsreg -unreg
zwsreg

Hiermee wordt de werkstation registratie opnieuw gemaakt.

Applicaties hebben een verify optie waarmee je een installatie opnieuw kunt uitvoeren. Hiermee worden registry settings opnieuw ingesteld en files opnieuw geplaatst:

NAL stands for Novell Application Launcher and is part of ZENworks Desktop Management. ZEN stands for Zero Effort Networking. So the NAL is used to provide a single way to offer applications, updates and settings to everyone.

The NAL and ZENworks Desktop Management is also used for the following functionality:

1. Workstation Registration
   1. All workstations are being registered in eDirectory. This is to associate all applications to. Only registered workstations are offered applications. This registration tracks which user is logged in and which ip address the workstation has.
2. Remote control
   1. In case the workstation is properly registered and the logged in user gives approval (required for every session) a system administrator can control a workstation in order to solve a problem. This is handy in case of minor problems.

If everything is installed correctly the NAL will start automatically during login. Inside the NAL there are folders to logically group all applications. In case you don't like this you could choose to view them all in once:

The NAL is used to offer different kinds of packages. This will mostly be installations and shortcuts. Installations are always grouped in specific folders and also the name of the package will tell you it's an install. Shortcuts link to the application they are supposed to start. In case the application is not installed the shortcut will be in black/white:
It's also possible to offer some settings for the convenience of your end-users. This could be for example the proxy settings and the windows update settings.

You can start the NAL by going to Start → Run and enter the following command:

nalwin

IN case the NAL won't start or the applications are not showing enter these commands in a DOS-box:

zwsreg -unreg
zwsreg

This will recreate the workstation registration.
