CDrom Autorun

There is no option to enable or disable automatically running cdroms in the user interface. To enable or disable automatically running cdroms, you must edit the registry:
  • Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  • Locate and click the following registry key:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
  • To disable automatically running cdroms, change the Autorun value to 0 (zero). To enable automatically running cdroms, change the Autorun value to 1.
  • Restart your computer (this is not always required).

Note: This method disables automatically running cdroms. If you want to disable automatically running cdroms depending on the cdrom that you insert in the cdrom drive, you can press and hold down one of the SHIFT key while you insert the cdrom.

This is insufficient (as cornflicker-worm prooves) Without patch KB953252 the registry key will only be read at mount-time. However, double-clicking in explorer will execute autorun.inf anyway. for an excellent dutch article about this, read http://www.security.nl/artikel/26322/1/Microsoft_schuldig_aan_verspreiden_wormen_via_XP_netwerkshares.html
